Chamber FAQs

How is the Chamber funded?

Chambers of Commerce do no receive any funding from tax dollars at the local, state, or federal level. Our entity has a 501 (c)6.  A 501 (c)6 organization is tax-speak for a business association such as a chamber of commerce. Although chambers are organized to promote business, they don’t generate a profit and don’t pay shares or dividends. That qualifies them as non-profit organizations, exempt from paying income tax. Most of the funding comes from investments from memberships, sponsorships, and events/programs.

Does the Chamber Sponsor local events?

Our Chamber (similar to most) does not fiscally (cash) sponsor events. Not only do we operate with a very limited budget, but as we have many members who host events, it would be impossible to do this fairly. We are open to sponsorship trades, for our members only. These are reviewed on a case by case basis. We also host many of our own events, such as the Art & Awards Gala, Oktobrufest, and educational programs. We also partner with other entities to host and support events such as the Ice Fest & Summerfest on the Rio.

Does the Chamber represent a political party?

No, the Chamber is pro-business and encourages legislation that does the same. We support and promote our members as well as other programs and projects that align with our advocacy policy and stated key issues for our community. Everyone is welcome and all members are treated equally regardless of political affiliation.

Does the Chamber accept complaints on local businesses or “kick out” businesses based on complaints?

We are always here to listen, however our job is not to “police” our members, nor do we have the power do to so. Relating to anti-trust laws, membership can only be revoked or refused if a member has broken a law and been convicted of such, is not a legally operating business, or does not have any ties to our area. Those who do not have ties to the area may still be accepted if their product or service is not offered or available locally.

How long has the Alamosa County Chamber of Commerce been in existence?

Founded in 1923, we have been around for 100 years.

How many members does the Chamber currently have?

That number fluctuates throughout each year as businesses open and close, change ownership, etc. As of November 2024, the Chamber has 279 members.
