River-bend Engineering Presentation

Conejos Survey.jpg

Please join the San Luis Valley Chapter of Trout Unlimited on Tuesday, October 29th at 7 PM at the Alamosa Senior Center, 92 Colorado Avenue for a presentation by Chris Pitcher of Riverbend Engineering. SLV Trout Unlimited (SLVTU) and Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) have been working on conceptual habitat designs for 2 miles of the Conejos River below Platoro Reservoir. Riverbend Engineering is presently working on the survey and design for the project. The project includes channel shaping and habitat enhancement work on specific locations with complex habitat that is ideal for overwintering fish. The channel shaping component will create a narrow low flow channel, resulting in better habitat for trout during low flow events and during the winter months when reservoir releases are minimal. Chris’ presentation will focus on conceptual designs for the 2 mile stretch associated with a topographical survey of the project area and feedback is welcomed. This project dovetails with TU’s Winter Flow program work in the Conejos River, which is designed to increase flows during the winter through creative partnerships with water users.  Funding for the survey/design work was provided by SLV TU, with major support from the annual Conejos Superfly fishing tournament hosted by Conejos River Anglers (CRA). This is a great opportunity to learn about stream habitat improvement design and find out what is being planned for this stretch of the Conejos.

As always the meeting is open to the public. Refreshments will be provided and a prize drawing will be held at the end of the meeting.
