Geology of the San Luis Valley

  • Adams State University Porter Hall 208 Edgemont Boulevard Alamosa, CO, 81101 United States (map)

The first day we meet at Porter Hall and learn how to read a compass and maps. The students will then do a short treasure hunt on campus using their compass and map reading skills. In the second half we will drive to the La Veta Pass and look at some sedimentary rocks, and a recent landslide. And learn about when and where the rocks were deposited.

On day two, we will drive out to Mogote and look at a prehistoric landslide on the side of a volcano. Here too we will talk about how these rocks were formed.
