Narrow Gauge: Spadefoot Story Slam

  • Narrow Gauge Book Cooperative 602 Main Street Alamosa, CO, 81101 United States (map)

Each month, the Narrow Gauge Book Cooperative hosts the Spadefoot Story Slam community, sharing stories based on a theme, selected at the previous month’s Slam.

While inspired by the Moth Story Hour, Spadefoot Story Slam meetings are not a contest, but instead are a way to come together and practice sharing, and deep listening.

The theme for September is Age. This inspiration from the Moth Story Hour Card deck is a great place to start with ideas: Prepare a story about the onslaught of minutes and years. What works for cheese, wine, and professors may be a detriment to athletes and bananas. Bring tales of the folly and vigor of youth or the wisdom of age. Expiration dates and age discrimination. Stories of growing up too fast, battling the ravages of time, or finding contentment in your bracket. Tell us about a time you were wise beyond your years, a time you felt like a kid again, a time when older wasn’t wiser.

Creative interpretation of the theme is always welcome!

Group Norms:

At the Spadefoot Story Slam, we are here to share stories and listen to each other. We practice sharing our experiences and receiving experiences without commentary. When you're not the storyteller you are receiving and practicing deep listening. It takes courage to speak in front of a group, and we respect each other’s stories and the time it takes to tell them.

Stories are told from the heart, rather than from the page, and must be true as remembered by you.
